When a father, who is the patient, disagrees with his son about having surgery, whose wishes should be given preference?

The position of the adult patient of sound mind carries more weight regarding performing surgery over that of his father or son because he does not have any guardianship over him in such a case. If the patient is not of sound mind, his father's decision is given preference, because he is his guardian.
